FOOTBALL WELCOMES REFUGEES INITIATIVE

The Portuguese Players' Union (SJPF) promoted between October 24th and 31st the 11th Edition of Week Against Racism and Violence in Sport, under the motto “Football Welcomes Refugees.”

The 11th Edition of Week Against Racism and Violence in Sport aims to promote initiatives on raising awareness and support to the refugees, promote football and respect, fair-play and tolerance values, value social inclusion in and for sport, emphasize sport’s function while society’s unifying, foster communal and tolerance areas, promote young people’s participation in healthy activities, avoiding deviation to risky practices and fight the value crisis and disintegration and social exclusion.

Between October 24th and 31st, the Union promoted various initiatives: the signature of two Memos of Understanding (one generic, between football’s family (SJPF, Portugal’s Olympic Committee (COP), Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Portuguese League of Professional Football (LPFP), Portuguese Association of Football Referees (APAF), Football Coaches National Association (ANTF), sport newspapers A Bola and Record and tv stations RTP, SIC, CMTV and Sport TV), and another specific one, between the Union, the Portuguese Refugee’s Council (CPR) and the High Commissariat for Migrations (ACM); action in the stadiums and in schools; messages of captains of all First and Second Portuguese League's clubs and offer school manuals to 19 young refugees.

The presidents of SJPF, COP, FPF, LPFP, APAF, ANTF, CPR and ACM welcome the refugees, through messages that can be read HERE.

OPENING CEREMONY

The opening ceremony took place on October 24th, in the Estádio Universitário, in Lisbon, with the signature of two Memos of Understanding. The event counted with the presence of the signatories of the two Memos of Understanding and several Portuguese ex-players, including João Vieira Pinto, José Carlos, José Pedro, João Oliveira Pinto, Carla Couto, João Paulo and Anselmo.

Pedro Calado, president of the High Commissariat for Migrations (ACM), signed a specific Memorandum, centered in the situation experienced by refugees.

The Union promoted four initiatives to raise awareness to the practice of values like respect, tolerance and fair-play, together with children and teens from schools of Setúbal, Barreiro and Loures districts.

MATILDE FIDALGO

The 21-year-old player is captain of Futebol Benfica, national champion of feminine football in title, and adds up 13 caps for the Portuguese National Football Team. The footballer accepted the Union’s challenge to be the ambassador of the Week Against Racism and Violence in Sport.

FOOTBALL WELCOMES REFUGEES SJPF OFFERS SCHOOL MANUALS

The ambassadors Abel Xavier and Matilde Fidalgo delivered school manuals to 19 young refugees, originating from countries like Mali, Nigeria and Paquistan, that are hosted in the Reception Centre for Refugees Children, in Chelas (Lisbon).

Abel Xavier is a former footballer who played in the Portuguese National Football Team and in 14 clubs in eight countries. Portuguese with african blood, he made his career in Europe and ended it in America. He disputed an European and one World Cup and became one of the icons of his generation.

ACTION IN THE STADIUMS AND MESSAGES OF CAPTAINS

Players of Estoril, Rio Ave, Belenenses and União of Madeira displayed t-shirts allusive to SJPF’s campaign on the 8th journey games of the Portuguese’s First League. The captains of all First and Second Portuguese League’s clubs associated with a message, that was promoted in the portuguese press and social networks.
