FIFA’s
FIFA’S DARK SIDE
Joaquim Evangelista, Chairman of the SJPF’s Board, analyzes the eight-year suspension imposed by the Ethics Committee of FIFA to Joseph Blatter and the consequences of this decision for world football:

"The FIFA’s Ethics Committee punished president Joseph Blatter and UEFA’s leader, Michel Platini, with an eight-year-suspension. A surprising decision. On one hand, for the sanction’s dimension and, on the other, because it reaches the high leaders instead of the simple employees.

FIFA’s power has long gone sparked interest in the different football agents and it perpetuates itself, being talked about all over the world for the worst motives. Blatter, as fate’s irony, was just elected and withdrawn for the same corrupt power that elected him. Incapable of doing any structural reform, he limited himself to guarantee its continuity, promoted and got along with undesirable people for football that unscrupulously reported him.

If it’s true that this suspicion clime is a hard setback for football and sport, it’s not less true that it’s an opportunity for those who come next to clean the bad image and initiate reforms.

In a moment such as this one we’re living, it’s crucial that every one of the stakeholders assumes their responsibility, be clear and transparent.

The financial return that football generates has to be distributed for all agents and not only by half-dozen friends that are sitted at the same table. A change of paradigm is demanded, more solidarity, better redistribution. The leaders must serve football instead of serving themselves of football. A good government is urgent.

In this matter, FIFPro, that represents footballers worldwide, has to, once and for all, demand that the protagonists - the players - be in the government bodies, supervise the activity and participate in the financial results. FIFPro has an historical opportunity. It can’t just stand still waiting to see what happens or what others say. It can’t behave itself as the ones that it criticizes. It has to act, be demanding, anticipate solutions. Be the player’s active voice next to every candidate and present their claims.

The shock that this scandal is causing won’t stop having consequences in the national perspective, with federations and clubs. Portuguese football will be no exception. The damage will depend on the way we prepare ourselves for its effects! May the force be with us!"
