Congress
CONGRESS FIFPRO LEGAL NETWORK

After the interesting and relevant interventions of 11 experts from various areas of the world of football and the respective discussions over the two days (18 and 19 April), Theo van Seggelen, secretary general of FIFPro, closed the congress that held in Lisbon under the theme "Insolvency in football and the position of the player”.

As a final balance is possible to say that the discussion was very fruitful. FIFPro recognizes the problem and believes that there are still more questions than answers and said that it is clear that insolvency is a problem for everyone (players, clubs, leagues, UEFA, FIFA, etc).

There is a need for more balanced managements, supervisions and wage controls more effective and better enforcement of the legislation concerned, among other measures. For Theo van Seggelen "the situation is unacceptable and cannot continue."

Joaquim Evangelista, president of the Portuguese Professional Footballers Association (SJPF) and host of the conference, started by highlighting the two days of "excellent socializing and strengthening of institutional relations between the unions"

Joaquim Evangelista said that the event "had the merit of addressing a hard solving topic with current international interest, promoting the exchange of ideas between the key football agents (FIFPro, FIFA, UEFA, EPFL and ECA), with an additional input from guest speakers who allowed to produce a set of ideas that might form the basis of a future recommendation." And concluded: "The player, in insolvency, gets caught in a trap from where he cannot get out, unable to react which is unacceptable."

More than 60 representatives from the major players unions around the world attended the FIFPro's Legal Network Conference. Fernando Gomes, FPF's president, was present in the opening session. For him, "the player is the weakest link, but he's the game's essence, and so he must be defended."
