Red card to racism, for human dignity

Last weekend, the FC Porto player Moussa Marega was victim of racism by the Vitória SC supporters. After the game, the case created an enormus impact in the national and international media.

The Players Union take a stand to congratulate Marega for his courage and show total solidarity with the player, who decided to leave the field after the racist insults.

This episode call, once again, all sports agents to the need for an unanimous speech, showing absolute intolerance with any case of violence, racism or any other form of discrimination.

Joaquim Evangelista, president of the players union, warned: “Much has been said about the role of players, caught by surprise during the game. The players are united and in this matter willing to stop and demand respect, if necessary.” The union awaits, in addition to disciplinary procedures, the result of the process initiated by the new Authority for the Prevention and Fight against Violence in Sport (APCVD) and, in addition to the criminal proceedings, the accessory measures provided by the law against violence and discrimination in sports, in order to ban the authors of these racist songs of portuguese stadiums.

Match-fixing

Another problem that negatively affects football is match-fixing. The Judiciary Police organized a conference about this topic, with the participation of the Players Union. Joaquim Evangelista defended the education and information of the players as essential mechanisms to fight match-fixing.

In the Netherlands, FIFPro held, for two days, the Legal Congress, which brought together lawyers and specialists in sports law around the world.

João Oliveira and João Nogueira da Rocha, representing the Portuguese Union, participated in the international conference that, among other topics, addressed the new FIFA DRC jurisprudence and the implementation of the “Player Protection Fund”.
