Portuguese Football stops, to prevent Covid-19 pandemic

Players asked, Portuguese FA and League accepted. All football competitions in Portugal are suspended indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic that is spreading around the world.

To monitor the impact of Covid-19 on national competitions, an emergency group was created, composed by the Players Union, Portuguese PA, Portuguese League, District Football Associations, Portuguese Football Referees Association, National Football Coaches Association and National Football Doctors Association.

The call for the last emergency working group meeting was made by the Players Union, after collect the position of the the first and second league captains.

With the increase number of positive cases in Portugal, and the example of several athletes infected in other countries, the players demanded the suspension of all competitions, complaining for their safety and the protection of their families.

United in prevention

Joaquim Evangelista reinforced the exemple given by the players and the importance of having all the football stakeholders united: “The players gave an exemple of responsability and civic action, in face of this threat. Know we should trust in the work of the government and health professionals. Sport should settle an exemple to the community, and with this decion we are are closer to resuming sports life as before”.

Unpaid salaries

Also this week, Desportivo das Aves players suspended their activity, demanding overdue salaries. The 1st league team have two months in debt and the situation of the under-23 team is even worse. The Union will demand guarantees fromt the League and use all means at disposal to claim the players rights.
