Football family united against covid-19 pandemic

Portuguese football is united to fight against the pandemic caused by the covid-19 virus. Players, referees and coaches joined a campaign promoted by the Players Union, on sociais networks, with the hashtag #FicaEmCasa (stayhome), appealing to the importance of following the recommendations of the health authorities (DGS and government).

“Sport must work together for the sucesso of the contingency measures and monitor in detail the evolution of the outbreak in the country, always following the recommendations of DGS, to decide when and how the activity can be resumed”, says Joaquim Evangelista, president of the Players Union.

Unpaid salaries

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Union met by videoconference with the 1st league team Aves, who is facing more than two months of unpaid salaries. The Union has already asked the League to officiate the club in order to put an end to this situation. The club failed with the financial control in March and has already been notified by the League to comply. In addition to the sanctions that will be required for non-compliance, players will be able to receive support from the Salary Guarantee Fund, if the situation remains.

In a public statement, the Portuguese Union clarified that in this moment where the competitions are suspended, due to a force majeure situation, the right to received the salary by the players remain intact, and unilateral measures aimed to affect this right, namely to suspend or reduce the amount to be paid, are ilegal. The biggest concern at the moment is with clubs struggling with financial difficulties since the beginning of the season. Portuguese Union, boar member of FIFPro, is following the debates with FIFA and UEFA, at european level, supporting the organization to protect the basic rights of players, as workers.
