Lay-off affects agreements between clubs and players

The Portuguese Players Union, in a public statment, informed the results of the negotiation process developed with the Portuguese League and the terms in which its available to contribute for a dialogue between players and clubs, related to the COVID-19 crisis.

The Union accepts that the adjustment of the match calendar in 2019/2020 will force a negotiation related with extensions of labor contracts and loan agreements, about to expire and the holidays period should be adjusted to the needs of the remain sportive calendar.

As a principle in negotiations, the Union requires proportionality, higher salaries may suffer a larger cut than lower salaries at this moment, and the necessary cuts in this period must be restored/compensated  when the competition returns, in terms to define by agreed between players and clubs. Unilateral measures, such as the use of lay-off, should be avoided.

In times of social isolation, the Union created a new cicle of interviews - “Alone at Home” - in which professional players will talk about their experiences in this difficult moment of quarantine. Rio Ave captain, Tarantini, was the first interviewee.

In the most difficult moments, the Union is present, last weekend the foreign players of AD Oliveirense SAD, who were abandoned by the club, received the visito of João Paulo, the union´s delegate for the north region. Food and financial support were given to this young footballers.

The situation in the third division is concerning the players, after the decision to end the portuguese FA (FPF) to terminate the competition in 2019/20. To answer the problems caused, FPF created a fund to support clubs to pay the remain salaries, in the global amount of 4.7 million euros.
