Portuguese union sent to the stakeholders the positioning about return to play

In Portugal, the football stakeholders and the government are discussing the conditions for the return of professional competitions (I and II Leagues). The portuguese union shared with the government, the portuguese FA and the League his positioning about the return to play protocol, following the FIFPro guidelines at international level.

The union clarified that players want to return to play, but they have serious concerns for their health. In the union perspective, it´s essential the approval of the protocol by the health authorities, before the return of trainings and, eventual, return of the competition.

The president of the union, Joaquim Evangelista, defended the work with the government, criticizing the clubs that returned to trainings, unilaterally: “this is a time to reinforce mutual trust between football stakeholders, respecting diferences, and work in a protocol which ensures the safety of all the participants in the game. We recognize the economic impact of the suspension, but health comes first, and football can´t replace the health authorities in this decision.

The players around the world are defending that the return of the competitions should only happen when all the conditions of safety and health are guaranteed. In an interview to BBC, Diogo Jota said that footballers health must be preserved and only in that case, with everything ready, the competition should return.
